New Office

After months of waiting, our new office is finally almost ready!

The building is 8 floors:

1 - motorbike parking
2 - reception
3,4,5,6 - office space
7,8 - boss's palace

Lots of room for motorbike parking

Luckily there is an elevator as well as stairs

The model showing off the office space (about 2/3 of it can be seen from this picture). I plan to have about 12 people per floor, but of course Thao says there should be 16 or more....

This building is a lot better than all the others we looked at because there are a lot of windows for natural light, but not too much because there is a building next door to block the direct sun. The other buildings were the same size but only windows at the end of the room, and felt really claustrophobic...

A bank has just moved in next door, so hopefully the thieves will go there first ;)

And here's the design plans that will make it all worth it! The billboard will be a huge 4m x 6m card from our game. On the inside, both walls will have huge posters of Wulven art. And we will decorate the reception area like a cool and hip video game company should be ;)

Động đất và ám ảnh đèn chùm

12h đêm mình vẫn ngồi đây, sụt sịt khóc vì sợ. Các loại đèn trong nhà bật sáng, đặc biệt là hai đèn chùm ở phòng khách và phòng làm việc mình đang ngồi. Để làm gì? Để có gì còn nhận biết cho nhanh.

Đang đứng ở cửa phòng ngủ, vừa bước chân ra thì thấy chồng đang bế con và hớt hải quay mặt chỉ cái đèn chùm ở phòng làm việc chao đảo rất mạnh giọng run rẩy: "Hunny, earthquake, earthquake". Cũng là lúc thấy sao người mình cứ nghiêng ngả kiểu gì. Ôi chóng mặt quá.

Nhìn sang cái đèn chùm khác ở phòng khách thì thấy như có ai túm giật nó mà lắc mà đẩy... Trời ơiiiiiii, động đất thật rồi, động đất mạnh quá. Mình chao đảo bám chặt vào tường còn nghe loáng thoáng chồng vừa ôm chặt con vừa quỳ gối xuống sàn nhà vừa lẩm bẩm: "Ban đầu anh tưởng em nghịch cái đèn chùm trong phòng làm việc, anh chạy ra phòng khách thì thấy cái đèn chùm ở đấy cũng rung cũng giật thì anh lại nghĩ là có ma. OMGGG...". Rồi tai mình nghe chồng nói hỏi liên tục: "Hunny, what to do now, what to do now..."

Mình vẫn bám chặt tường, ghế, bám những gì có thể bám... thì thấy tất cả chao đảo nghiêng nghả. Tiếng nhà ai rơi đồ đổ vỡ loảng xoảng. Tiếng người gọi nhau giật giọng, hò hét toáng lên ngoài hành lang, tiếng chân người chạy rầm rập... Ôi, mình bắt đầu hoảng loạn và òa khóc, vừa khóc vừa nói: "Em không biết đâu, em không biết đâu...". Rồi trong cơn hoảng loạn mình cũng kịp mở vội cửa ra và nói như quát: "Anh chạy đi, chạy ngay ra bấm cầu thang cho con xuống trước đi, em lấy quần áo ấm cho con đã".

Khổ thân cả chồng và con đều đang mặc rất phong phanh vì chuẩn bị cho con đi ngủ và vì trong nhà vốn dĩ rất ấm. Mình chạy ngược vào trong phòng ngủ tối om mà quên cả bật đèn lên, tay cứ quờ quạng trong hộc tủ. Điên thế cơ chứ, sao ngày nào cũng kêu ca sao quần áo rét chất nhiều thế này mà sao không cất đi. Thế nào mà giờ quờ mãi chả được. Rồi cũng vớ được một cái, chạy ra cửa quờ tay với ngay được cái áo khoác của mẹ. Phi ra cửa, chạy một đoạn lại quay về khóa cửa... Sau rồi nghĩ mình điên, đã chạy thoát thân thì lo đi, lại còn lo khóa cửa, có ma nó vào nhà ăn trộm lúc này...

Có 4 cái thang máy cho cả tòa nhà nên chả dám đợi nó đâu. Chạy bộ thôi. Một chị hàng xóm hớt hải vừa chạy vừa bảo mình: "Chị ơi chị ơi, em vẫn đang mặc đồ ngủ mỏng tang đây này". Dồ ôiiii, ai mà còn quan tâm chứ, em nhìn chị đi đây này, vẫn là kiểu muôn thủa là bít tất bao giờ cũng cọc cạch mỗi cái một kiểu một màu, được đi trong một đôi dép tổ ong mà cái thằng khốn nào kia nó thấy trước cửa nhà có một đôi tổ ong mới toanh vừa mua, nó thèm quá đổi luôn đôi cáu bẩn của nó lại đây này...

Mình cứ thế phi thẳng cầu thang bộ, nhắm mắt nhắm mũi trong bóng tối mờ mờ ảo mà chạy theo mọi người. Mãi đến lúc đấy mới sực nhớ ra mình vẫn đang khóc, dở hơi thì cũng kệ mẹ tao. Mà dồ ôi là dồi, sao 23 tầng cao thế hả trời, sao mãi mà chả xuống đến đất, chân thì mỏi rã rời, mà chả bao giờ tập thể dục, chả bao giờ đi bộ quá 30m, nay phải chạy bộ từ tầng 23 xuống đất, còn phải hỏi nhá...

Mãi cũng xuống đến nơi. Trời ơi, người là người nhốn nháo hoảng loạn như ong vỡ tổ. Đây rồi, may quá thấy chồng và con kia rồi, dễ biết lắm vì cứ ai cao cao nhất đám đấy chính là chồng mình đang ôm con kia, với bộ quần áo rất là bô nhếch. Ờ mà nhìn mới thấy, tất cả từ già tới trẻ, ai cũng trong đồ ngủ, đồ mặc nhà lôi thôi lếch thếch với bộ mặt hớt hải lo lắng... Nhìn lại thì chỉ có mỗi mình là vừa xịt xoạt vừa lau nước mắt, huuhuhu...

Vẫn tán loạn, người chạy ra khỏi tòa nhà, người vẫn nán lại trong sảnh. Chồng bảo ở trong này an toàn hơn em ạ. Mình thì cứ cuống lên, chả biết ra hay cứ ở đấy, mà chân thì cứ bủn rủn rã rời vì vừa run, vừa phải qua một cơn hành hạ lôi bộ từ tầng 23 xuống... Mình vẫn sụt sịt bảo: "Ahh ơi, đi ra khách sạn ngủ đi anh ơi, hay là về nhà mình ở KT đi, chỗ nào mà thấp thấp ấy, có gì còn chạy ra được cho nhanh mà anh ơi...".

Chồng nhìn vợ nước mắt vẫn chảy ra trên má thì biết vợ sợ hãi và hoảng loạn lắm, mới bảo: "Ừ, thế em bế con để anh chạy lên nhà lấy quần áo cho con và em, rồi lấy tiền nhé". Hic, chồng bấm thang máy, lại phải đợi thang xuống. Mình bấu tay anh bảo: "Ahh ơi, thôi kệ đi, đừng lên nhà nữa, có gì em sống sao nổi, bỏ đi. Về nhà mình ở KT xin dì 5 tiền tiêu cũng được mà". Nói xong thì cửa thang máy mở, chồng chạy vù vào làm vợ không kịp giữ tay...

Mình nhìn quanh, cũng là lúc khá nhiều các ông người Nhật Bản đi làm về (có khá nhiều người NB và phương Tây thuê nhà ở đây). Có lẽ họ cũng biết có việc gì xảy ra vì thấy cả cư dân tòa nhà nhốn nháo như kiến chạy xuống. Nhưng những người Nhật người nào khuôn mặt cũng rất bình thản, chả tỏ ra lo sợ gì. Có một ông đang nói trên điện thoại với ai đấy, mình nghe lỏm thì là đang kể cho bạn nghe chuyện động đất... Mình biết, với người Nhật thì chuyện động đất là cơm bữa, nhưng vẫn nghĩ nhà ở Nhật người ta được thiết kế và xây dựng có chống động đất, chứ ở Việt Nam thì không biết thế nào... hic... Lại sợ, lại lo, lai sốt ruột sao chồng lâu xuống thế... Nghe có người đang kể là ở nhà cái tủ quần áo to thế mà bị đổ sầm xuống sàn. Nhà thì bị bể cá đổ vỡ nước tung tóe trên sàn nhà... Trời ơi...

Tự nhiên thấy sợ thế nào, chỉ muốn gọi điện cho ai trong nhà để kể chuyện, để mong một câu an ủi, nhưng mà không có điện thoại. Thấy có anh chàng kia có điện thoại, chạy sang định gọi nhờ một cuộc, vì nghĩ trong lúc nước sôi lửa bỏng thì chắc người ta cũng không nỡ từ chối. Ấy thế mà run và sợ đến độ đầu óc mụ mị cả ra đến nỗi số điện thoại của dì 5 hàng ngày vẫn gọi ấy thế mà giờ bấm đi bấm lại cả chục lần vẫn sai số không gọi được... huhu...

Lục tục thấy có một số người bắt đầu quay trở lại bấm thang máy đi lên nhà... Chắc thấy im ắng nên trở về đây. May quá. Chồng xuống, mang theo một ba lô nhỏ. Chồng thông báo ngay: Anh vừa check news, có động đất 7 độ rích-te ở Myanmar, nên Hà Nội mới bị ảnh hưởng mạnh như thế, vì Hà Nội gần mà"... - "Ôiiii thế à, gần thế mà đêm nay lại bị nữa thì làm sao hả anh?"... Vợ quá nhạy cảm, vừa nghe chồng thông báo thì lại òa khóc luôn, èo cứ như trẻ con, đều thế cơ chứ.

Lúc này vợ đang ngồi ôm chặt con trong cái áo khoác của mẹ (mẹ thì vẫn phong phanh như cũ), vì mẹ vơ vội thế nào mà hóa ra túm được mỗi cái áo gile cho con, chả bõ bèn gì. Mẹ vừa mếu máo vừa thì thào bảo con ơi con đừng sợ nhé, hay là cả nhà mình về bà ngoại nhé, nhà bà ngoài gần núi Ba Vì, có gì thì mình chạy lên núi, ở đấy chắc chắn không có sóng thần rồi, mà có động đất thì núi cũng không sập được đâu con ạ, con đừng sợ..." - Chồng chả hiểu vợ nói gì nhưng cứ thấy vợ mũi dãi sụt sịt thành ra lo thêm, chỉ biết ôm vai vợ an ủi. Mà chồng may quá mang áo len cho vợ nữa, may quá đỡ lạnh, dưới này lạnh quá...

Ngồi một lúc lâu, thấy nhiều người lục tục quay về. Chồng an ủi bảo không sao đâu em, mình quay lên nhà thôi. Bà ngoại chị Emily (nãy giờ vẫn ngồi cùng mẹ con bà cháu chị Emily) thì cứ rủ cả nhà mình về nhà bà cùng với mẹ con chị Emily. Bà bảo nhà bà rộng lắm, còn phòng cho nhà cháu đấy, với lại không sợ đâu cháu ạ, nhà bà có một tầng thôi, có gì thì chạy ra dễ mà nhanh lắm.. Huhu...

Cuối cùng cũng đi lên, lên để định về theo bà ngoại Emily. Lên tới nơi bố lại đọc tin và xem CNN thì thấy là nó xảy ra ở vùng biên giới Lào, Campuchia, Thái Lan, Myanmar... Lại sợ nữa, vợ vẫn còn hoảng, ăn nói vẫn cứ lắp bắp vì run, lại hỏi: "Anh ơi anh ơi, còn động đất nữa không anh?"

Lên nhà ngồi một lúc lâu, vừa bước xuống ghế thì như bị ám ảnh, thấy nhà cửa lại nghiêng ngả, chao đảo như ban nãy, đèn chùm cũng rung lên lắc giật... Vợ gào lên: "Hunnyyyyyyy hunnyyyyy earthquake again , againnnn.... " rồi lại hoảng loạn gào khóc... Chồng vội chạy sang ôm chặt vợ nói là không sao không sao, tại em sợ quá nên vậy thôi.

Vợ vẫn run và sốc, vẫn ngôi sịt soạt mũi khóc dấm dứt thêm. Chồng sang ôm chặt vợ an ủi: "Em ơi, không sao nữa đâu em à, mình cứ ở nhà thôi, an toàn rồi mà, em đừng khóc nữa". Con gái cứ hễ thấy bố mà ôm mẹ là kiểu gì cũng nhào sang ôm mẹ theo... Nên bố mới bảo: "Katie an ủi mẹ đi, bảo mẹ ơi con yêu mẹ lắm, mẹ đừng sợ nữa đi"... Mình vòng tay ôm 2 bố con lại òa khóc to hơn vì cứ ngu si đi tưởng tượng điều gì khủng khiếp... huhuhu...

Rồi khi ra mở cửa đi vứt rác, thấy cậu bảo vệ tắt đèn hành lang, mình mới bảo: Em ơi, đêm nay đừng tắt điện hành lang nhé, để có gì còn biết đường biết lối chạy xuống cho nhanh. Cậu bảo vệ thấy thế thì cứ cười cười bảo: "Chị ơi, chị đừng lo, nhà này an toàn lắm. Năm 2009 cũng đã bị một lần rồi, cũng rung lắc nhưng sau đó ở ban... gì gì đấy đến bắn đo độ lún nhưng mà không hề lún tí nào nhá. Kết cấu xây dựng toà nhà đảm bảo lắm. Chị cứ yên tâm đi"... Hơ, cậu chàng nói có mấy câu đấy mà mình yên tẩm hẳn lên...

Mà mình hỏi cậu ở tầng một thấy đông đất thế nào? Thì cậu trả lời nó cũng rung, lắc... nhưng không mạnh như mọi người ở trên cao này xuống kể... Trời ơi... thế đấy... Ở Hà Nội có mấy ai được cái "diễm phúc" ở tầng trên lầu cao như này đâu, nên lần đầu tiên chứng kiến cảnh động đất từ trên lầu cao thế này mới hoảng loạn làm sao... Hic, mà tóm lại từ hôm nay mình từ bỏ hẳn cái ý định tìm mua chung cư đẹp với xịn... Nhưng mà còn hợp đồng nhà này... Hic, hết hợp đồng đi để mình còn phới... huhuhu.

Mình đi mở cái balo để cất đồ thì phát hiện ra chồng còn kịp gói cả đôi giầy rách trong cái túi bóng được nhét trong ba lô, mình mới dở hơi gắt chồng: "Anh làm sao thế, có hàng tỷ thứ quan trọng trong lúc chạy loạn mà sao anh không mang mà lại vác cái đôi giày rách cho em làm gì? Chồng bảo: "Anh hiểu ý em, nhưng giầy là để lỡ trong trường hợp không có taxi mà em phải đi/chạy bộ xa thì nó tốt cho chân em mà...". Tự nhiên thấy hối hận vì gắt chồng thế. Chồng thì trong lúc sống chết vẫn nghĩ cho vợ, còn vợ thì hoảng loạn chỉ biết khóc và run... huuhuhu...

Tái bút:

Giờ này mà mình vẫn sợ, ngồi đây, bật đèn sáng trưng, viết những dòng này nhưng đầu óc vẫn đau nhức vì vẫn chưa hết sốc. Vẫn ngồi đây, suy nghĩ mông lung, tí tí lại nhìn bóng đèn chùm để theo dõi có gì còn chạy vào gọi hai bố con... Và viết những dòng này. Nhưng có vẻ những dòng này diễn tả không hết được sự việc và chưa đầy đủ với những cảm giác, sự việc xảy ra...

Ôi, mệt mỏi, buồn ngủ và đau đầu... Nhưng có dám ngủ không? Ước có thể một nhắm ngủ, một mắt mở để thỉnh thoảng nhìn bóng đèn chùm mà cảnh giác. Ôi, đèn chùm, lại đèn chùm... cứ như nỗi ám ảnh mất rồi...

À, hóa ra là chồng cũng đã ôm con chạy bộ một mạch 23 tầng (À không, tính ra là 26 tầng tất cả) xuống. Hỏi ra thì chồng mới bảo là trong khi mà xảy ra sự cố động đất thì không bao giờ được chui vào tháng máy, mà chỉ có chạy bộ thôi nhé... Ôi, nói chung là không ngờ vì sự việc xảy ra nên lần đầu tiên 3 vợ chồng con cái mới biết tới cái mùi chạy bộ cầu thang tới 26 tầng hichic...

Và giờ đã 1h sáng. Vợ vẫn không ngừng nhìn lên cây đèn chùm. Có lẽ hoa mắt, có lẽ ám ảnh... cứ thấy sao nó cứ rung rinh rung rinh đung đưa.

Ra đóng cửa để đi ngủ thì phát hiện ra động đất làm cho cánh cửa bị trệch ra khỏi lề cửa, nên giờ không còn cài được cái then nữa rồi.

Và giờ là gì? Là nỗi ám ảnh. Đi cũng sao thấy nghiêng ngả người muốn ngã, ngồi cũng thấy không vững vì cái ghế nó cứ đung đưa, trượt lên trươt xuống... Nhắm mắt lại thì lại càng thấy ong ong trong đầu, quay quay vi vút.

Mình biết sẽ trắng đêm đêm nay.

Wow, time goes by so fast... So many good memories from the wedding, learning to understand each other, starting our life's journey together. Having a baby, starting a business, going through the ups and downs.

Thanks to my wife for always being there for me, being natural, being crazy, being Thao... I've watched you transform into a dedicated and loving mother, and I'm really proud of you. Katie is so lucky to have such a wonderful mommy! I love you hunny muuuuah!

The Maid

We finally got a new live-in maid about two weeks ago. She is 17 and unlike the last maid, not very shy ;)

On Saturday morning the maid woke up very early at 5am and turned on all the lights and made lots of noise. She said that she dreamed that her grandma died so that she had to go home, but would come back tomorrow. She wanted to get paid her salary already, but she didn't even work two weeks yet and did not even earn the first half-month that is given to the maid company. So we gave her just a bit of money and she left all her clothes here and left at 6am and said she would come back tomorrow...

So I woke up at 9am, and... hmmm... where is my ipod touch? I always keep it on my desk and only use it for work. After checking around the house, yep it is definitely gone and the maid must have took it. I know it was there that night because I was testing a game. But she can't really be that stupid to think she would get away with it? Why would she leave all her clothes here too? Well, it is only an ipod worth $250 but looks the same as an iphone worth about $500. Of course Thao didn't think to check anything, because the maid left all her clothes here.

Well, it suddenly makes more sense that last week our tv remote went missing. I thought Thao was crazy to suggest that the maid stole it... But Thao tells me that there is a big black market for remotes. Ok, we will have to go there to get ours replaced! Anyways, when we were finally convinced that it must have been the maid that stole it, Thao got her brother in law to go to the police office in the maid's hometown (a few km from them), and her sister that works in the govt office called in a few favors. And then the manhunt was on!! Thao told them that the ipod didn't really cost too much, but the data on it was important to the company... ok!

So the police paid a little visit to the mothers house, and the maid had already been there but left immediately with her boyfriend. She was probably off to try to sell it... But there was still that little doubt left in my mind, why would the maid try to steal it? Maybe I just put it under a pillow somewhere here... Well... a few hours later we heard that the police caught the little thief and recovered the stolen goods. We did have to pay the police a $100 bribe errrr... I mean an "expedited service fee", to catch her so quick and get back our stuff right away. It was worth it though.

I don't know what will happen to the maid now... She told the police some story that she took it because we didn't pay her salary, but she was going to give it back tomorrow if we paid her. And all her clothes are still here... Thao called the maid company and is trying to get them to pay us the $100 bribe back. Or we can pay the police some more to have the maid thrown in jail...

Sometimes it's good to live in a country where the police have so much power. If that happened in Canada, there's no way that the police could catch a "petty thief" in time before she could sell the stolen goods. It would come down to us saying "hey you took it!" and she saying "prove it!" Well, here in Vietnam it is more about who you know and how much "fees" you can pay! ;)

1st Halloween

They don't celebrate Halloween in Vietnam, but we managed to find a few stores that had some costumes and decorations...

A big pumpkin made out of styrofoam. We wanted to get a real pumpkin to carve, but we couldn't find any...

In the afternoon we hosted a meeting for the "February babies club", and about 20 moms came with their babies and talk to a doctor that came to give a presentation and answer questions. Everyone had a lot of fun!

Watch out Katie, she doesn't seem too happy that you are stealing her hat!!

After the meeting was done, it was time to dress up for Halloween. Katie is a beautiful pink angel!

For the past few days, a lot of children on our floor that came to visit saw all our decorations and kept asking about Halloween and wanting to get some candy. In the afternoon today I saw a bunch of kids gathered near the elevators making masks out of paper and coloring them, how cute! It was probably their first Halloween too. But then when the time came, none of the kids stopped by, they were all sleeping already heheheh Maybe they will come tomorrow to get some candy... But we did have a few visitors from downstairs and some older kids from our floor.

There were about 3 apartments that gave out candy, but that was good enough for the kids heheh

The baby from next door was already wearing yellow, so he made a perfect bee! heheheh

The day started like any other day... Mommy and Katie sleep until noon while daddy gets up early to work :P

But it's a very special day today: Katie is 100 days old! Daddy has been bugging mommy for so many days to make a party... So finally it is time to get ready. Here is Miss Giraffe!

Thao's friend from university, Hau and her daughter. The daughter liked to say "GO TO SLEEP BABYYYYY!" very loudly heheh

Hau brought her mother along to look after the kids so that the grownups could eat. Mommy could eat a good meal for a change! Grandma has a lot of experience with babies, having had 7 children and lots of grandchildren. She wrapped Katie up in a scarf and made a little hat out of a towel. Heheheh so cute! :)

Also a few days ago we went for more vaccines at 3 months old. This time it was the terrible vaccine that 8/10 babies get a bad fever. But Katie was ok, she just slept most of the day. Thao was worried that she lost a lot of weight because she was sick, but she weighs 6.5kg now which is very good

Time to go shopping! We tried to put Katie in the baby carrier for the first time... Well, we had to wait for so long for a taxi to come, that she was already tired of it and couldn't stand it anymore! Ok, maybe next time...

Visit Hometown

We went to visit Ba Vi hometown now that Katie is bigger. Thao really needed a break, so it's good that there are lots of people there to cook and look after the baby. We wanted to stay for a few weeks, but unfortunately it was too hot!! Even with a fan, it was so hard to sleep at night, and so noisy in the day with dogs barking, cows mooing, pigs, etc. Katie got sick too, lots of green poo. I'm sure you don't want to see it, so I left that pic out! ;)

Even though we had to go back home after only a few days, at least we got to visit everyone again. Bong is getting big now, here she is with her big sister Chip.

To celebrate Katie's 2 months, we got her dressed up to go out with mommy and daddy to the fancy new restaurant that just opened near our house. This is the cute outfit that she got from our neighbor.

Oh, she's getting big! A few days ago we went to the doctor for her 6-in-1 vaccine shot. She gained weight really good over the past month, and now weighs 5.7kg

Wow, we've been so busy lately that we didn't have time to update our blog... okay, here is what you missed!

When Katie turned 1 month old, we had a party for her and invited some friends to a restaurant.

Mommy looks hungry! It was the first time we took Katie outside (except to go to the doctor), and Thao kept worrying about her. Katie started to cry a little bit, so Thao got up and took her down to the first floor. After a while some friends went to check on her, and they came back and said that Thao wanted to go home already! But luckily daddy went downstairs and everything was fine. Thao was just worried that Katie was crying a bit, but it was a noisy restaurant already so nobody cared... Thao just fed her a bit and she settled down.

Mommy needs to eat too! Good thing that Ha was there to help out!

1 month and 13 Ghosts

Last night was horrible, Katie did not sleep all night and we eventually went to bed at 6am. Then today at 13:00, Thao's two younger sisters came to prepare for the 13 Ghosts... 13 shrimp, 13 little crabs, 13 snails, 13 bird eggs, 13 potatoes, 13 sticky rice balls, 13 normal rice balls, 13 green oranges and 13 green fruit..... Oh my! And with the 13 candles and 13 incense sticks, surrounded by lots of paper and fake money bundles, the whole thing was a huge fire hazard! heheh

Eventually they told me that when the baby is 1 month old, the custom is to make an offering for 13 spirits to protect her throughout her life.

Since we did not do things right at new year, finally we have a proper full chicken with entrails wrapped around its neck and a rose in its mouth!

Doesn't exactly look too healthy to keep a baby in a room filled with smoke like that, right? Well actually it was soooo windy that morning that we had to close the windows for a few minutes for pray time.

Many friends came to visit throughout the day. I'll have to keep Hà in mind when we need a babysitter, because she was holding Katie all day and fed her a bottle too. She is a very good friend who often comes and brings food for us, or goes shopping at the market for us. Last week she cooked us Japanese curry rice!

Ling is another good friend who was very busy all day helping us prepare everything. (she is the girl that wrote the newspaper article about me)

Too much excitement for one day! Katie is fast asleep, holding her lucky money...

We also went to the doctor for the 1 month checkup a few days ago. Everything is fine, although Thao is worried that Katie is not gaining weight fast enough. But of course the baby growth charts show that she is right in the middle of average weight.

Wow, Katie is 3 weeks old already! I don't know where the time went... it is probably because she keeps mommy and daddy very busy...

I tried to do that Trixie Tracker thing for a day, where you record every little detail what your baby does. Sleeping, nursing, diaper changes... But it just got to be too much of a hassle. It was hard enough to take care of a newborn, I didn't want to have to record everything too. Plus I found it very depressing when you review the night before and realize how little sleep you got...

Thao's mom stayed with us for a week after Katie was born, and she was a great help. Actually she wanted to stay longer, like one or two months! But we thought we should follow the Western way and try to do everything ourselves. And the house is really too small for too many people. She was planning to come again this week with Thao's sister, and prepared a lot of food to bring, like whole chicken and fish. But suddenly the weather changed and got cold again, and she got sick, so she couldn't come. Thao's sister said that one night at midnight, her mom was was walking around the playground and crying, saying that she misses Katie and worrying if we could take care of Katie by ourselves. :( She still wanted to come, but we had to say that she should stay home and take care of her health...

So now we are doing daily baths by ourselves. Well, Thao is doing it, I basically just fill the bath tub with water... But Thao is really good and Katie loves to be in the water. I read some Western books that say you should only do a sponge bath and maybe only once a week until the baby gets older. But Thao says that's because it is very clean there, here in Vietnam the air is dirty...

Katie's umbilical cord stump finally fell off after about 2 1/2 weeks. Thao saved it and put it in a plastic bag with some cotton, and tied it to the lamp in the bedroom. I'm sure she had a good reason....... heheh

Here is Katie just hanging out... During the day she usually sleeps a lot, and not matter what we try to do to wake her up, she sleeps like crazy. Of course, during the night she wakes up if we make the slightest noise. She likes to stay awake from 12 to 4 am :(

Here is the basinet I bought for Katie. It is hand-made from bamboo but only cost $12... You have to imagine me riding home on the motorbike with this tied to the back heheh

Thao and Katie had to stay in the hospital for 3 nights. It was really hard for me because I had to go home each night and sleep alone. Oh... yeah it was hard for Thao too! She was so hurt after the operation but still had to take care of Katie all night and get very little sleep. The nurse said that most people just give their babies to the nurses to take care of at night, but even though Thao was so hurt and crying, she still wanted to breastfeed Katie. I am so proud of Thao, she is really a great mom!

The French hospital was really good. All the nurses were friendly, someone with a big white chef hat comes to give you the food that you ordered for your meal, and everything is really clean. You can see how happy Thao is to eat her shrimp dinner with rice and soup!

For the first few days Katie slept a lot, but now she is starting to be more active...

Actually Thao was scheduled to stay in the hospital for 4 nights, but we went home earlier because everything is much easier when we are all back home...

There are a few Vietnamese customs about new babies that are strange to me... One is that when you come home from the hospital, you need to place a dot of lipstick on the baby's head, and in the bag (that the person carrying the baby must carry) you have two chopsticks and a knife... A knife?? Yeah, I found out the hard way. "Oh Kyle, get the lipstick from the bag's front pocket..." So I put my hand in and searched around. OMG!!! A knife! Ouch!! Lucky I was in the hospital already...

Another thing is that when you bring the baby home, you have to cover her face and quickly go inside so no neighbours see. Then you have to be very careful who visits, because if someone with a "bad soul" visits the baby, she will cry a lot for one month... So better not to let any friends or neighbours come over. One of Thao's best friends messaged her that she wanted to come to visit and see Katie, but she wasn't sure if she had been good enough so she didn't want to come...

Thao's mom is staying with us now to help out. It was interesting to see how good she is with babies, after raising 5 daughters and more recently taking care of grandchildren every day. Thao said her mom wrapped up the baby tight like she was making a Banh Tet (rice cake wrapped in banana tree leaves), and Katie slept for so many hours.

Now we are getting a nurse to come to our house every day to give Katie a bath. At first I thought that was kind of silly, shouldn't the parents just learn how to do it themselves? But again it was amazing to watch someone with a lot of experience do everything. We were surprised at how hot the bath water was, but Katie loved it. Maybe she will be an Olympic swimmer some day... The nurse does everything so fast, not just a bath, but clean eyes, clean out nose, clean mouth, disinfect the belly button, change into new clothes and get a massage. And after that Katie is very clean and happy!

Well, everything is going fine now, and it really helps a lot that we are both home all day and Thao's mom is here too. Katie is a real joy, and no matter how tired you are, you just look at her cute little face and know that it is all worth it.

Hello everyone, my name is Katie! I am having a very strange day today, I don't know what to make of it yet...

I knew something was wrong starting last night... I was getting hungry, so I started kicking mommy's tummy so she would give me some food. But no matter how much I moved, she didn't listen! I could feel her wake up very early in the morning, but still she did not eat anything...

I can feel mommy and daddy go somewhere by taxi. I know it's not daddy driving the motorbike, because it's not so bumpy. I can hear them talking about what a nice room this is.... Maybe they are staying in a hotel? Are we on vacation? Yay!!

Now they are talking about some free stuff that they got. I don't really care, all I want is some FOOD! Hey, did you forget about me in here??

This is a picture of me and my mommy. It is getting a bit small inside here, I think I should ask for a bigger place... But wait, I can feel that mommy is scared about something. I try to be very still so I can hear what is going on...
She is laying down on the bed, but now the bed is moving! We travel for a while, and then I hear daddy say goodbye and that he will see us soon... Now many people are around and talking. And then... I really don't know what happened, but suddenly I was taken out of mommy's tummy and I was left in the cold! Did I forget to pay the rent this month?? PUT ME BACK INSIDE!! WHHHAAAAAA!
Oh wait, now I am inside a very hot box... and something else is very strange! I can move my arms and legs! It feels so free, I just keep moving my arms and stretching my legs like I'm exercising. Now the hot box is moving, and then I can hear daddy calling my name! I try to open my eyes, but everything is so bright! They put me in a room with other crying small people. But I have this nice hot box, so I think I'll just exercise for a few hours while I can, maybe I have to go back inside mommy's tummy soon?

Oh, I am so tired now! When do I get to go back home?Finally I can hear mommy and daddy calling me, and they put me on the bed next to mommy. Hey, I know food when I see it! Mommy and daddy are surprised that it is so easy for me to eat... Ummm, did you forget that you didn't feed me all day???

Everyone is surprised that I have such long eyelashes, because Vietnamese have very short eyelashes. I try to close my eyes or hide my face when daddy wants to take my picture. You haven't signed my modeling contract yet!! But daddy says my eyes are very nice and greyish green like my Grandma Poole. Maybe tomorrow I will let them take a promo shot to boost my modeling career....

This is my daddy. I love it when he sings songs to me! My favorite songs are "Old McDonald had a farm" (but mommy has to do the baby ox sound!) and "How much is that doggy in the window?"

Here is my mommy watching me. I think her belly got hurt because I was too big inside. I hope you get better soon! Thank you so much mommy, I know you will be the best mommy ever!

Katie, mặt trời của mẹ ơi!
Katie - "my everything No1" của mẹ ơi. (Bố con thường dỗi khi mẹ nói bố chỉ là "my everything No2" của mẹ mà thôi, haha...).
Hôm nay là mồng 4 tết, năm 2010. Thế là chỉ còn chưa đầy 24h đồng hồ nữa thôi là mẹ con mình sẽ gặp nhau. Mẹ muốn con biết rằng điều này mẹ đã mong chờ con từ rất lâu rồi, 9 tháng rồi. Mẹ suốt mấy ngày nay ăn tết mà cứ hồi hộp ghê lắm. Người cứ nôn nao, chờ đợi cái niềm hạnh phúc nhất của 1 người đàn bà là được làm mẹ, được nhìn thấy con yêu chào đời.
Mọi năm thì tết nào mẹ cũng về quê Ba Vì nhà mình để ăn tết cùng với ông bà ngoại, các bác, các dì... Bố con cũng cực kỳ thích về quê ngoại để ăn tết vì bố bảo tết VN rất là đầm ấm, mọi người sum họp đông đủ cùng nhau làm bánh chưng bánh tét (thứ bánh mà bố con thích nhất), rồi là đi chúc tết họ hàng, xóm làng... rồi là được nhận phong bao lì xì, rồi là cầm những phong bao đi mừng tuổi người già, trẻ con trong họ hàng, làng xóm.... Bố con rất thích về quê ngoại ăn tết. Nhưng mà năm nay, những ngày tết cũng là vì sắp đến ngày con ra đời nên là bố mẹ quyết định ở lại Hà Nội, dù là ăn 1 cái tết "nghèo nàn", để mà đảm bảo sẵn sàng đón con, để mà nếu con có đòi ra sớm hơn dự định 1 chút thì cũng là gần với bệnh viện hơn, chứ nếu về quê ngoại ăn tết thì tuy là vui đấy, nhưng lỡ có vấn đề gì thì cũng mất khoảng 1,5h đồng hồ đi xe ô tô, mà mẹ thì ngại ngồi xe ô tô xa lắm... Mấy ngày tết ông bà cứ điện thoại bảo bố mẹ về quê ăn tết suốt đấy... Khổ thân ông bà, chỉ vì nghĩ là muốn cho bố mẹ về ăn tết cho vui, và đầy đủ thôi mà.
Nhưng nói là vậy thôi con à, bố mẹ cũng chẳng có tâm trạng gì háo hức tết nhất gì hết, mà tất cả bố và mẹ, cùng với gia đình nhà ngoại chỉ luôn háo hức chờ đón con ra đời mà thôi... Hôm qua, mùng 3 tết, trời thì lạnh cóng rét mướt thế, vậy mà bà ngoại, bác Hùng, dì Tư và em Tôm, anh Anton, Chíp... đã xuống tận nhà mình để thăm bố mẹ và con đấy. Cả nhà mang xuống Hà Nội bao nhiêu là đồ ăn, nào là bánh chưng, bánh tét, canh măng, củ hành muối, măng ớt, miến, lòng gà, rồi cả giò chả, rồi cả 1 con gà to nữa, rồi là hoa quả.... Nói chung là mang rất nhiều thứ đồ ăn xuống đây cho bố mẹ và con, vì cả nhà ngoại cứ lo lắng nhà mình ở Hà Nội chả có gì mà ăn... Và bà ngoại bảo mục đích xuống thăm cũng là lo lắng cho ngày mai mẹ vào viện sinh con, nên là xuống Hà Nội để động viên mẹ con mình đấy mà. À, ông bà ngoại còn gửi phong bao lì xì cho con đấy. Chị Chíp và anh Anton với em Tôm, bác Hùng... cũng đều gửi lì xì năm mới cho con đấy... Tất nhiên bố và mẹ cũng đã tặng phong bao lì xì cho con rồi. Bố đã nhét tất cả tiền lì xì vào con heo sứ xinh ơi là xinh mà bố đã mua hôm bố và mẹ đi chợ hoa tết ấy, và để có ai lì xì năm mới mừng tuổi cho con thì bố mẹ sẽ cho tiền vào đấy để để dành mua bỉm cho con sau này.. Hihi.... Vui quá con nhỉ.

Bố và mẹ này, èo nhìn tí tởn nhỉ...vì sắp được gặp con yêu ý mà;))

Katie à, thực ra là mẹ thấy vô cùng có lỗi với con. Vì mãi đến tận hôm nay, ngày mà con sắp ra đời mà mẹ mới bắt đầu thực sự viết cho con. Không phải là mẹ lười hay mẹ ko có thời gian, mà tất cả những tình cảm dành cho con mẹ chất chứa nó trong lòng. Mẹ muốn con hiểu là trong lòng mẹ, với mẹ thì con là tất cả. Nhiều khi, rất nhiều khi mẹ muốn ngồi xuống và bắt đầu viết cho con. Nhưng mà cảm sức trong lòng mẹ kỳ lạ lắm, có khi ngồi xuống rồi, nhưng mà mẹ ko biết bắt đầu từ đâu, cảm súc trong lòng mẹ cứ dâng trào lên mỗi khi mẹ định bắt đầu viết cho con.... Rồi cuối cùng mẹ lại ko viết được gì cả, súc động dâng trào, trăm ngàn điều muốn viết, muốn nói.... Và trên hết là mẹ nghĩ rằng dù có viết thế nào đi chăng nữa, nhiều chữ đến bao nhiêu chăng nữa thì chữ cũng ko thể giãi bày hết tấm lòng của mẹ, tâm tư tình cảm của mẹ dành cho con đâu Katie à......Rồi con sẽ thấy, mẹ là người có quá nhiều cảm súc. Điều này hơi khác với bố con 1 chút, cảm súc của bố nhiều thế nào thì cũng để trong lòng, còn mẹ thì mẹ phải nói ra, viết ra... mà khi chưa nói ra được, chưa viết ra được thì "bức súc" lắm..:))...

Con yêu à, từ giờ trở đi, mẹ sẽ bắt đầu tập viết cho con, viết thật nhiều cho con. Và tất nhiên là sẽ viết bằng tiếng Việt rồi. Với mẹ, chỉ có tiếng Việt là tiếng mẹ đẻ mới dãi bày hết những điều mà mẹ muốn viết cho con thôi con yêu à. Mẹ biết, sau này con sẽ nói tiếng Anh rất giỏi. Nhưng mẹ cũng muốn con cần phải nói tiếng Việt giỏi nữa, vì tiếng Việt cũng là tiếng mẹ đẻ của con. Rồi để sau này con còn nói chuyện với ông bà, các bác, các dì và các anh chị em họ hàng của con nữa chứ, con nhỉ.

Con à, thế là cuối cùng cũng đến ngày mà mẹ hằng mong đợi, ngày mà mẹ con mình gặp nhau. Mẹ nghe kể về chuyện sinh nở nhiều rồi, là đau lắm, đau kinh khủng lắm... nên quả thực mẹ cũng lo lắng lắm con ơi. Mẹ nhớ cái ngày mà khi vừa bắt đầu mang thai con, mẹ hàng ngày lên wtt đọc về nhật ký vượt cạt của các mẹ khác mà mẹ sợ nên mẹ khóc suốt, đến nối bố phải cấm tiệt mẹ vào đọc những chỗ đó. Thế là thôi, mẹ cũng ko đọc nữa, nhưng vẫn hàng ngày mẹ lên trang web đó đọc và tìm hiểu những kinh nghiệm mang thai và làm mẹ như thế nào. Mẹ ko đi làm, từ sau khi có mang con thì bố ko muốn mẹ vất vả nữa(Chả có mấy ai sướng như mẹ con ạ. Bố con là người đàn ông rất tuyệt vời,nói nhỏ thôi... hihi... Khi nào có thời gian mẹ sẽ kể cho con nghe về bố Kyle nhá;)) ), nên mẹ chỉ ở nhà và hàng ngày đọc tìm hiểu kinh nghiệm mang thai và làm mẹ. Tuy thế, những kiến thức mà mẹ đọc được chả là bao nhiêu cả, nên mẹ vẫn lo lắng lắm. Vì mẹ mang thai con là con so, nên trăm ngàn thứ mẹ vẫn chưa biết gì hết. Hiểu biết của mẹ về mang thai và làm mẹ còn chưa có 1 chút gì cả. Mẹ còn nhớ cái hôm con được 34 weeks thì con đã thuận thai rồi, mẹ đã mừng lắm. Nhưng tới khi 36weeks mẹ đi siêu âm thì con lại quay ngược lên, thế là bác sĩ bảo mẹ có thể nếu cứ như thế thì sẽ phải đẻ mổ. Ôi thôi, thế là về nhà mẹ sợ lắm lắm, vì trong đầu mẹ chỉ cứ nghĩ mình sẽ sinh thường và đọc nhiều về những kinh nghiệm sinh thường, chứ chưa có khái niệm sinh mổ thế nào. Thế là mẹ bắt đầu lo lắng và căng thẳng ghê gớm... Nhưng được bố con và bà nội động viên rất tốt. Rồi bây giờ mẹ cũng nghe mọi người xung quanh và các bác sĩ cũng nói là giờ nhiều người chọn sinh mổ rất nhiều, vì nó an toàn và rất tốt. Thế nên mẹ đã lấy lại tinh thần và giờ mẹ rất là tự tin đón nhận là sẽ sinh mổ con. Với mẹ giờ sinh mổ hay sinh thường thì ko còn quan trọng gì nữa hết. Trên hết là mẹ chị muốn mẹ con mình được mẹ tròn con vuông. Mẹ chỉ muốn được nhìn thấy con ra đời khỏe mạnh là mẹ sẽ chấp nhận hết những đau đớn và vượt qua hết những sợ hãi thôi... Vậy thì con yêu ơi, con cũng giúp mẹ nhé, con hãy cùng mẹ dũng cảm vượt qua chướng ngại cuối cùng để mẹ con mình được gặp nhau mẹ tròn con vuông... Hãy giúp mẹ vượt cạn 1 cách dễ dàng, và con hãy ngoan ngoãn nghe theo lời bác sĩ để mẹ con mình sẽ thuận lợi và may mắn gặp nhau ngày mai con nhé. Hãy cùng với mẹ "chiến đấu" con nhé. Hãy giúp mẹ vượt qua nỗi sợ hãi mà mọi người vẫn thường "dọa dẫm" mẹ là đau lắm, là này nọ kia... Mẹ chẳng thèm quan tâm tới những điều đó nữa đâu. Với mẹ, sinh con ra là 1 bé Katie khỏe mạnh, hay ăn chóng lớn, xinh đẹp, và học hành giỏi giang là tất cả đối với mẹ rồi...
Ôi, cứ nghĩ đến ngày mai là ngày mẹ con mình cán đích rồi là mẹ bồi hồi, nôn nao khó tả quá... Ôi, mới ngày nào bố và mẹ súc động khi phát hiện ra 2 vạch đỏ trên que thử thai.... Cảm ơn con yêu Katie ơi. Cảm ơn con đã đến với bố mẹ, cám ơn con đã cho bố mẹ cái duyên được làm bố mẹ của con, con nhé.
Ngày mai mẹ con mình sẽ cố gắng cùng nhau vượt qua chông gai cuối cùng để mẹ con mình gặp nhau để mẹ con mình sẽ mãi mãi bên nhau suốt đời con nhỉ.. Ôi, hạnh phúc biết chừng nào là ngày mai mẹ được goi con 2 tiếng : CON YÊU.

Con à, mẹ tạm dừng ở đây, đã 2h chiều rồi. Mặc dù mẹ có thể viết dài và rất rất dài thêm nữa. Nhưng dù có viết thêm nữa thì cũng ko thể diễn tả hết tâm trạng của mẹ những ngày này, vào lúc này.... Giờ me sẽ cùng với bố con đi lễ chùa 1 chút để cầu mong cho mẹ con mình ngày mai mẹ con mình được gặp nhau thuận buồm suôi gió, được mẹ tròn con vuông... Rồi mẹ và bố con cũng sẽ đi shopping thêm vài thứ lặt vặt nữa rồi sẽ về..... Cả nhà mình cùng đi dạo phố nào con. Thế nhé con yêu. Mẹ sẽ lại viết cho con nhiều thật nhiều nữa... Sau sáng mai thôi là cuộc đời mẹ sẽ sang 1 trang mới, 1 trang mà mẹ đã mong chờ suốt bao nhiêu năm nay: Đó là được làm mẹ của con.

PS: Thực ra thì là 10 ngày nữa mới tới due date. Nhưng mà mẹ thấy bác sĩ nói là trộm vía con to rồi nên là nên sinh mổ sớm. Thế là bác sĩ bảo ngày mai là ngày bác ý đi làm sau Tết, nên bác ý bảo mẹ đến để sinh con thôi.. Thế là mẹ OK cái rụp, sớm 1 chút cũng ko sao, mẹ tin tưởng ở bác sĩ, nghĩa là con đã đủ ngày đủ tháng rồi phải ko con... Mẹ cũng chẳng thích xem ngày gì như 1 số người khác. Vì bố con là người phương Tây, bố con thích tự nhiên, mà mẹ cũng thế... Mẹ có cần gì đâu con. Với mẹ thì ngày con ra đời thì là ngày nào cũng đẹp hết á (^___^)..

Tet 2010

Unfortunately we couldn't go back to Thao's hometown this year, because the baby is due any day now. But there was lots to see around Hanoi, and it was a completely different experience for me this year.

We went out too early, so this was just the performers practicing. It was raining that night, so we decided that we shouldn't stay out to see the fireworks. Better to just watch it on tv!

When we came home, we saw that the neighbors made some very nice altars outside their doors to prepare for midnight.

Ohhh wait... This is ours, the most simple looking one! Poor me, my wife is a bad Buddhist and wasn't prepared LOL! Ok, she says it was the first time she stayed in Hanoi for Tet, so she didn't know about that...

At midnight it was a very inspiring sight, to see everyone in the entire apartment building praying outside their doors, with fireworks blasting in the background and bells ringing.

Don't worry, inside is much better. Our altar is very full with everything you need for Tet!

The peach tree branch is the most recognized symbol of Tet. I think Thao spent about 3 days looking to get a good price heheh

Thao's project is making new curtains. She's an old grandma already!

We couldn't go back to Ba Vi to celebrate Tet, so the party came to us! (also Anton and Thao's Mom came, who are not in the picture) Of course they brought so much food, a whole chicken, baby bamboo, lots and lots of eggs, banh tet, more cake.

You can see the red bag that Tom is holding, that is the lucky money that you give to children for Tet.

My mom knows Kyle loves this Banh Tet very much. So she made this Banh Tet and send for us very early, about 1 week ago..;))...

This Banh Tet is made from sticky rice, so its hard to open it. And when you cut it you must cut by the line you see there which ties the Banh Tet. One end you keep it in your mouth, one you put all around and pullll by your hand...

So it is Vietnamese New Year soon, aka Chinese New Year, aka lunar new year. That is the time where you clean up the house, like "winter cleaning" the less-popular cousin of "spring cleaning". Anyways, we have a little Buddhist altar high up on the wall where my wife burns incense. She says she's not really Buddhist, but likes to do it for good luck. So it came time to clear the altar of a year's worth of ashes, so I thought I would help her out (she is 9 months pregnant, after all) and get up on the chair and take the dustpan and clean everything. So she came walking by and starting yelling at me why I was using the dustpan and that it was dirty! I tried explaining, ok sorry it got some ashes on it, but no big deal, we can wash the dustpan before using it to clean the house again, right? Well, it took some more yelling and a lot of punches for me to realize that she was trying to explain that the dustpan is the most dirty object in the world, and you shouldn't touch it to the altar. I guess it was like the equivalent of peeing in the holy water!

After that, she was worried all day that something bad would happen to me as punishment... And sure enough, that night when we came back home after a walk, I put my key in the lock, and it wouldn't budge. It was like a ghost was holding the door handle and wouldn't let me come in! I tried for like 10 minutes to turn the key or even get it back out, but it was totally stuck, the first time that has ever happened. The neighbours came and put WD40 everywhere and still it didn't work for another 30 minutes. But the best part is that with 5 people standing around the locked door trying so hard to get it open, suddenly the neighbour's daughter who just learned to walk comes over by herself and hands us her parent's house keys. Heheh smart girl! Eventually after about 45 minutes we did get it open, and it has been fine ever since. Thao says it opened exactly when she said a prayer apologizing for my mistake.... hmmmmm....

Tết Việt Nam tuyệt lắm!

Hai năm trước, Kyle Poole người Canada, đến Việt Nam làm Giám đốc kỹ thuật của một công ty chuyên viết chương trình trò chơi (game) cho điện thoại di động, Kyle không hề nghĩ mình sẽ yêu và cưới một cô gái Việt Nam. Nhưng cuộc sống đầy những bất ngờ khi anh gắn đời mình với người và đất nơi đây.

Ăn tết Việt Nam lần đầu, Kyle rất run, anh chẳng biết gì nhiều về phong tục quê vợ. Anh gọi năm Kỷ Sửu là năm "con bò đực" khiến mẹ vợ phì cười. Một kỷ niệm mà Kyle không thể quên là khi dọn dẹp nhà chuẩn bị đón Tết, anh cầm cái hót rác đặt lên bàn thờ để gạt bụi vào. Vợ anh, giận lắm mà anh không hiểu tại sao. Giờ thì anh đã biết, bàn thờ là nơi rất thiêng liêng trong ngôi nhà của người Việt.

Kyle khoái đi chợ tết. Anh rất ấn tượng với hình ảnh đường phố tràn ngập hoa, đồ trang trí, đồ bày bàn thờ, bóng bay... rực rỡ màu sắc. Thấy những chiếc xe máy, xe đạp chất đầy hoa đào, có khi phải đến mấy chục cành. Dẫu biết vậy là phạm luật, anh vẫn lấy làm khâm phục, vì chỉ riêng chuyện đi xe máy ở Việt Nam đối với anh đã là cả một thử thách không nhỏ.
Anh bảo, Tết Việt Nam vui vẻ, nhộn nhịp, và đầm ấm, giống như lễ Giáng sinh ở quê anh, là dịp để mọi người trong gia đình sum họp, thể hiện tình yêu thương với nhau. Kyle gọi cây đào là “Tetmas Tree” và cứ mong sớm đến Tết để mua đào.

Thích nhất trong ngày tết với Kyle là những phong bao lì xì đỏ. Anh còn nhớ cảm giác thích thú khi lần đầu tiên được nhận “lì xì” của bố mẹ vợ, rồi lại được cầm phong bao “mừng tuổi” cho những người lớn tuổi, các em bé trong gia đình. Mùng một tết, anh cũng dậy thật sớm, mặc quần áo mới và đi bộ quanh làng chúc tết họ hàng bên ngoại. Tết năm nay vợ anh chuẩn bị sinh em bé, không thể về quê ăn tết cùng gia đình ngoại. Anh rất nhớ những bữa cơm Tết cả nhà cùng quây quần bên mâm, có bánh chưng, bánh tét, món mà anh đặc biệt thích, canh măng, hành muối, dưa chua... Việt Nam đáng yêu từ những điều nhỏ như vậy, nhất là Tết Việt Nam tuyệt lắm!

Chuyện bố Kylao ấy mà

Hôm qua, có 1 chuyện xảy ra làm mình điên quá mà ko biết làm thế nào nên mò lên wtt, túm ngay được mục "Nói xấu chồng, xả xì-trét". Đấy đấy, cũng chỉ vì ngài perfect quá mà thành ra thế, perfect quá nên cài gì cũng lăng xăng dành hết lấy phần việc của vợ để làm nên mới ra nông nỗi này đây:))... Mình là từ giờ có vấn đề gì là mình cứ lên đây "nói xấu" để sau này cho con gái Katie đọc mà biết, hí hí...
Đây, mình copy nguyên văn cái mình đã post ở wtt thế này:

"ÔI, may quá, túm ngay được topic này rồi. Vào sả cho hả cơn cái đã. Nhưng trước hết, nói tạm thế này đã, là chồng tớ thì tớ chưa bao giờ dám chê điều gì. Bạn bè tớ và những người hàng xóm biết về chống tớ thì toàn nói trên đời này chả có người đàn ông nào mà "tuyệt" hơn thế. Ừ, thì cứ cho là thế đi, nhưng vấn đề này là ở topic "khen chồng" khác. CÒn hôm nay chuyện xảy ra và làm tớ sôi máu chưa từng thấy. Chuyện này tồi tệ đúng là các mẹ ở đây có hình dung 7 ngày cũng chả ra...
Hôm nay, tớ lau dọn bàn thờ để chuẩn bị 2 hôm nữa cúng ông công ông táo. Bàn thờ nhà tớ hơi cao, mà tớ thì bầu gần đẻ rồi. CHồng tớ xí xa xí xớn cứ lanh chanh chua đòi leo lên cái ghế cao để lau dọn bàn thờ cho tớ. Thôi thì ok, vì cứ nghĩ lau dọn thôi thì gì mà lão ko làm được. Thế là tớ đang mải cắm cúi ở dưới, đến lúc nhìn lên thì thấy lão cho nguyên cái hót rác bẩn thỉu lên bàn thờ. 1 tay cầm hót rác, 1 tay cầm cái khăn để gạt bụi trên bàn thờ vào cái hót rác.... Ôi zồi ôi là tớ giật mình, và hoảng cả người và trở nên điên chưa từng thấy... Bàn thờ là nơi thờ cúng linh thiếng nhất, thế mà.... Tớ gào lên bảo anh mang ngay cái hót rác xuống cho tôi. Lão còn chả hiểu gì lại bảo: Ư, để anh dọn xong đã em... Zời ạ... Tớ tức quá đi mất. Thế là chưa bao giờ quát chồng to tiếng đến thế và cuối cùng lại còn đệm 1 câu vào cuối cùng cho hả giận: "Idiot" ...
... Chán quá đi mất, chồng với chả con cãi nỗi gì, có mỗi thế mà ko biết gì cả...
Đấy... mọi người có hình dung được ko? THế có thể cho là "tại ko biết" được ko? Tớ chạy sang bà hàng xóm kể cho bà nghe thì bà ấy bảo "Nó ko biết là đúng thôi, vì nó là người nước ngoài mà"... Nhưng mà tớ vẫn điên mãi tới tận bây giờ, sao nhìn mặt ghét quá đi..."

PS: (Thì cũng biết, sau đấy mặt bố kylao dài xị ra như cái bơm là tại vợ "mắng" chồng trước mặt người khách như thế... Bố kylao cũng có vẻ muốn giận vợ lắm, nhưng thấy mặt vợ chả khác đâm lê nên biết là ta đã phạm tội tày đình tày trời rồi nên là phải im re đến tối... Bản thân mình cũng biết là mính sai, là ko nên "mắng chồng" lúc đó.. Haizzzâ.. nhưng mà biết làm sao được cơ chứ.. lúc đó điên thế cơ mà....:)),....
Ok, nói tiếp vì sao lại nói là nhà có khách lúc ấy. "Khách"là cái moon bên wtt - hội TY ko biên giới. Sao em ý lại có mặt đúng lúc đấy? Là vì em ý chiều hôm qua đến interview bố Kylao vì muốn viết 1 bài về người NN đã sống và từng trải qua tết VN như thế nào. Thế là em ấy mới được cái "hân hạnh" chứng kiến lần đầu tiên mẹ kylao điên tiết với bố kylao thế nào... Nhưng, vì thế mới có chuyện cười mà mếu là lúc ra về em moon lại còn bẩu 1 câu thế này:"CHị ơi, em cho chi tiết ấy vào bài viết chị nhá" - chi tiết rể NN cho cái hót rác lên bàn thờ khi dọn dẹp đón tiễn ông công ông táo, đón tết nhất...- ấy mà ... Hơ hơ.. với kinh nghiệm đã từng là 1 phóng viên thì mẹ kylao hiểu chi tiết xảy ra ngay "tại trận" và "mục sở thị" ấy là vô cùng đắt giá đấy..:))... Ôi, mẹ kylao chỉ còn nước bó tay. com...chả còn biết gật or lắc...:))....

Còn đây là phần trả lời của 1 mẹ sau khi đọc xong post của mình ở mục ấy trên wtt thì cmt thế này:

" Tưởng chuyện gì...Đây là chuyện bực mình nhất về ox đấy hả? Ghen với mẹ này quá đi!
Mình thì vừa cãi nhau với ox. Tết nhất đến nơi rồi, đưa vợ có tẻo teo tiền, còn bao nhiêu giấu nhẹm đi. Mình vừa phát hiện ra. Tức k tài nào ngủ đc còn lão thì cứ ngáy o o nên mới lại càng tức cơ chứ !"

... Hơ hơ,,, Thực ra mình đọc các mẹ ở mục này xong mới thấy hỡi ôi các đức ông chồng đúng là nhiều thằng khốn nạn thật, khốn nạn quá đi mất... Cái cmt của mẹ kia chỉ là 1 trong những cái nhẹ nhàng nhất vì là mẹ ấy cmt sau post của mình nên up lên cho vui vậy thôi... Chứ mọi người vào đấy đọc rồi mới thấy đời nó khốn nạn làm sao hỡi các đức ông chồng.... Ờ mà đọc xong mới thấy chồng mình vẫn là tuyệt vời và perfect nhất trên đời.. Đọc xong mới lại thấy yêu chồng mình thế, dù là hôm qua anh ấy vừa làm mình sôi máu lên.. há há...Đây, link đây, ai rảnh tha hồ mà đọc xem có những đức ông chồng nó khốn nạn ntn nhá :))...

Tiếp theo đây là phần kết, phần thú vị nhất của câu chuyện mà giờ mới kể. Là thế này:
Tối qua, khuya rồi, đâu như là hơn 10h tối. 2 vc xuống sân khu TT để đi dạo (tối tối toàn thế, là đi bộ nhiều để cho vợ dễ đẻ), thì sực nhớ ra hôm nay là ngày vietel nó khuyến mãi 50% card. Thế là bảo chồng: ANh ơi, anh lên nhà mở cửa lấy 100 nghìn xuống cho em mua card vietel anh nhá, em đi lạo dạo đi bộ dưới này chờ anh xuống. Thế là chồng OK, đi lên nhà lấy tiền. Mình 1 mình cứ thong dong ở dưới và chờ tới 20 phút mới thấy chồng chạy xuống mặt mũi toát mồ hôi và đang còn thở hổn hển nói: "Em ơi, GOD punish anh rồi, chắc tại lúc chiều anh làm chuyện ko tốt ấy mà. Em ạ, anh ko biết sao mà anh mở mãi ko mở được cửa để vào nhà, chìa khóa cũng ko rút ra được em ạ"... Ối zồi ôi, mình nghe phát hiểu ngay là chồng đang nói đến việc lúc chiều là việc gì, và nghe chồng nói tới bị God trừng phạt cho thì tự nhiên mình thấy người cứ nổi gai ốc khắp cả thì ko còn biết nói sao... Vội chạy lên nhà xem sao thì đúng là chìa trong ổ mà ngoáy kiểu gì thì kiểu mãi mà ko ra. Rồi mình phải gọi anh hàng xóm sang, may là anh ấy ko đi làm ca tối. ANh ấy hì hà hì hục suốt bao lâu mà mãi cái chìa trong ổ nó cũng chả nhúc nhích chứ chưa nói đến là mở được. Mà lạ lắm nhá, chìa khóa vẫn trong ổ mà như là có ai ở trong cố kéo chặt cánh cửa vào ấy. Thà bảo là hóc khóa, ko cho khóa được vào ổ đã đành.... Rồi, mãi sau, anh hàng xóm lẩm bẩm bảo: "Ai ở trong đấy đấy? Thôi, đừng đùa nữa, bỏ tay ra cho tôi nhờ cái. Gớm, giữ ở trong gì mà giữ chặt thế" . Èo, tới đoạn này mình đúng là nghe mà gai hết cả người. Sợ quá.... Mặc dù là mình chả mê tín gì cả, nhưng mồm miệng bắt đầu lẩm bẩm: "Con lạy các quan thần linh, lạy quan âm bồ tát, lạy ông bà tiền chủ... Chồng con có làm gì sai thì cho con xin đi ạ, vì chồng con là người NN thì anh ấy chả hiểu cái gì cả. Nên xin các quan hãy tha cho vc con đi ạ... ". Anh hàng xóm nghe thấy thế bảo: "Thôi đi em, em có chửi thì chửi thằng công ty sản xuất khóa ấy, nó làm khóa đểu nên hóc mãi mới mở được".... Ơ, anh nói cũng buồn cười vì biết tại anh đang buồn cười vì miệng mồm mình cứ lẩm bẩm quan này quan kia.... Ấy nhưng mà có thiêng ko nhé, vừa nói xong 1 phút thì tự nhiên mở được cửa... Ôi zồi ôi là mừng hơn bắt được vàng. 2 vc rối rít cám ơn anh hàng xóm. Xong, mình vẫn nhờ chồng là vào lấy tiền xuống mua vietel card cho em. CHồng nói OK. Rồi chồng bược chân vào nhà. VIệc đầu tiên vợ ko ngờ đến là chồng vừa bước chân vào nhà là lập tức chắp tay cúi lạy lấy lạy để cứ như là chồng đã thật sự tin rằng mình làm việc xấu thì bị trừng phạt nên giờ phải cúi lạy vậy.... Ôi zồi ôi, vợ thấy thế lại vừa buồn cười, cũng lại thấy chồng đáng yêu thế cơ chứ.. Ko ai bảo gì cả mà tự nhiên trong phút chốc thay đổi và có niềm tin ngay... Mà cho dù anh có niềm tin ngay hay là cốt làm cho vợ vui, hay là suốt từ chiều thấy mặt vợ nặng nhẹ và giận dỗi (với đi kể lể cho cả xóm nghe chuyện chồng vác hót rác lên bàn thờ thế nào...) nên đoán chắc việc mình làm nó đã phạm sai lầm thế nào... cũng đã là tốt lắm rồi... Thì dù sao cũng biết chắp tay lạy bàn thờ thế là cũng đã làm vợ vui lên rồi và tha thứ cho chồng rồi..

Hề hề... Tương lai thì anh chồng mình sẽ là VN hóa 100%... Hớ hớ.. Ghét thế mà cũng yêu thế cơ chứ lỵ...
(Tối, lúc đi ngủ chồng thì thầm: "Anh học được thêm nhiều điều rồi em ạ. Anh sẽ ko bao giờ tái phạm nữa"... Mình cũng đoán là cái gì đã xảy ra ko đúng mà vợ "giáo dục"ngay thì chồng mình sẽ nhớ mãi và sẽ ko bao giờ tái phạm nữa... 36 week ultrasound

Well, it has been two weeks already since the last ultrasound... Do you think we went to any of the previous places? Of course not! Well, we went to this international clinic for a checkup before trying to get pregnant, but we didn't do any ultrasounds there. It is very clean, lots of fancy equipment, but it cost more than the others (although it is still cheap at about $12!) We came at 4pm and nobody was there, all of the nurses were looking very bored. So we just paid our money and went right inside. This was a nice change from the other places were we had to wait one or two hours even when we come at the right time...

The doctor really new what she was doing, and they can even record a video to give you on vcd. But we found out that Katie was being naughty again, she turned back to have her head up! We could not get a good picture of her face because of her position. The doctor said that maybe if the baby is too big, it can not turn back down, so Thao might have to do an operation. But since we paid but could not get a good picture, we can come back next week for free to try again and check if the baby has turned.

Of course now Thao is really worried if she will have to do an operation. After reading for so many weeks about natural birth, now she has to prepare for something else. But really I think it is still too soon to know for sure, there is still 3 or 4 weeks left before the due date...

Due Date: Feb 28, 2010 (based on weeks) OR Feb 20, 2010 (based on current baby weight)

Thao got a nice new haircut to prepare for the baby. Don't worry, her hair was colored a long time ago!

It is short at the back now, so it's a lot easier for her.

As you may have noticed from my pictures lately, my hair is getting very long... So I agreed to go get it cut. Thao wanted me to make it curly. Curly??!! I reluctantly said okay, just because if it didn't look good, I can always get it cut short again, right?

34 week ultrasound

Today we went for the 34 week ultrasound. Even though it has only been 2 weeks since the last one, we are supposed to go every two weeks to keep checking on the progress. This time Thao wanted to go to yet another different doctor! We arrived at 4:30 to take a number, but the doctor only starts at 5pm. Luckily we had number 9, so we went in around 6pm. When we went in, the last number taken was up to 25 already! He must be a very popular doctor...

Compared to the French doctor, this guy really knew what he was doing. He did all the measurements very quickly, and I saw a good picture of Katie's face. I was lucky, because this time I was allowed inside and could watch the doctor, but Thao didn't have a screen to watch. But the good news is that Katie has turned with her head down now, so she can be born any day now! I guess all that walking helped... The doctor again said that she is a big baby, but her legs aren't too big. Okay, I guess she will be short and fat heheh.

Due Date: March 1, 2010
Gestational Age: 34 weeks (since LMP)
Weight: 2800g +/- 200g (+ 1/2 kg in two weeks)
Mommy's weight: 60kg (+1 kg)

To celebrate, we went to Kichi Kichi, which is our favorite Hot Pot restaurant because you pay one price and can eat all you want. It's like a sushi bar, but with your own personal hotpot. Last year there was just one store, but since it was very popular, there are now about 6 all over Hanoi. There is one very close to our house, but the people there aren't so nice and there isn't that good of a selection. This time we went to a different place, and it was so much better. The difference there was that at the start they bring you some plates of beef, and they had lots of shrimp that Thao loves. The people were very nice and Thao talked to the manager who was making sure everything was running smoothly. Thao said that is more like Japan style, since in Vietnam the managers normally do nothing and just make other people do all the work. But what Thao really loved the most was that this place had free pepsi! Even though she was so full and couldn't possibly eat any more, she had to order a third glass of pepsi, just because it was free! Okay, I know who will be keeping me up all night by going pee too much! :)).

PS from Thao: Oh I remember that while the doctor was doing the ultrasound he said more than 3 times that Uh oh the baby's mouth looks very big, so he turned back to look at Kyle and said: Oh, i know why, coz the baby's father's mouth is very big that is why... LOL.
Very good for me that the baby already turned down, so I don't have to worry about operation. But I will still walk a lot so easier to come out. But I still worry because I remember that all the doctors say that she is a very big baby, so probably will hurt a lot and hard to go out :((

So bad and so sad, Kyle is sick now.
He said the reason must be is: Before yesterday, he ate some salada (which i made 3 days ago) and drink some milk (the bottle already open few day ago)... So early yesterday morning he started run to toilet to poo about 10times/day... (no, more than that). Today is still same. Since morning he wake up and just run to toilet... i heard something like he poo with just water... OMG... really poor him, huhu... :((((((((. (Oh, I remember at midnight lastnight his forehead was verrrryyy hot but verry good that now his forehead is normal again, not hot anymore.... )
He still taking medicines but seems its doesnt help. I call to my mom and ask my neighber, they all tell me to take Kyle to hopital to check if its virus something coz in vn when season changing ppl easy to get sick like that... And if its virus, that must be verry dange for me and Katie too.... But he still say NO NO NO, im just ate bad food and i will be fine soon... Now i wont let him eat anything with oil or meat inside, but only porridge ... By afternoon, if he ís not getting better, i will take him to the hospital by taxi :((((((...

PS: Yeah, i wanted to scold him verry much for eat something that he doesnt know what food ís still ok or bad.... Yeah, some time he ís a child like that, like some time he doesnt know the rice is till good or bad so just eat and get sick... Yes, he need to be scold for sometime but look at him now i just can not... Now he need me to take care of him well, i will scold him later... ;))

32 weeks ultrasound

This Friday 2010/1/2 (have to practice typing 2010) we went to my friend's wedding from Punch. Thao wasn't sure if she would be feeling well enough to go, but when the time came she decided that we could go to that wedding in the morning, then continue to her hometown for her cousin's wedding on Saturday. Since we were going to two weddings and visiting Thao's family again, of course I made very sure to bring the camera....... but oh no! Somehow I forgot the battery charging at home! :(

Today it was time for the 32 weeks ultrasound. This is the important one, to see if everything is okay. Since we already paid for the delivery package at the French hospital, we went back there for the included ultrasound... Well, it seemed like the French doctor didn't really know what he was doing. It was like watching someone who doesn't know how to use a computer try to figure out MS Word heheh. But he eventually figured it out I guess, and spent a lot of time to measure the head, leg bones, and try to get a picture of her face. But Katie was being naughty, and was hiding her face with her hand, so we couldn't get a good picture! He said that Katie was still a big baby, and is about the size of 34 weeks...

Due Date: sometime around Feb 11 - Feb 28, 2010
Gestational Age: 32 weeks (since LMP)
Weight: 2300g +/- 300g

Flower Festival 2010

31/12/2009. Ngày cuối của năm dương lịch. Ngủ dậy đã 11h trưa, bước chân khỏi giường là mở ngay bài hát Happy New Year cho có không khí. Thực ra đối với mềnh thì ngày này cũng chả có gì háo hức quá đáng lắm. Mọi năm, cái thời còn độc thân thì cùng 1 lũ bàn bè (hoặc với bf) đi bar để count down, rồi nhảy nhót đú đởn, nâng cốc chúc mừng. Năm nay thì khác, chồng con đề huề xum xuê cả rồi chả thèm bon chen nữa, hehe...
Ấy, cứ tưởng chồng mình sẽ exciting ít nhiều khi nghe bài hát Háp pì níu ìa, thế mờ khi hỏi thì lại bẩu:"Ôi, anh thấy ngày này bình thường thôi. Đối với anh thì TẾT mới là năm mới, TẾT mới là quan trọng hơn nhiều, vì lúc đó người người nhà nhà VN đi mua sắm, bánh trưng, hoa quả, mứt tết bày biện trên bàn thờ, trẻ con tíu tít xôn xao cười nói nô đùa... Anh thích TẾT em ạ...". Hêhhee.. mình thích cách nói của chồng, nghĩa là chồng phân biệt cái gọi là New Year này ko phải là TẾT, TẾT mới là năm mới, năm mới là quan trọng.. hehe...Đúng thế, nên TẾT đi vào từ điển rồi, TẾT đấy chính là năm mới của người VN. Hí hí.. chồng mình đã thành người VN 100% có lẻ rồi nhá, há há...

Chiều 2 vc đi dạo phố, vào Fanny ở bờ hồ ăn kem, 2 vc toàn ăn kem ở đấy. Ăn xong, để xe ở đấy luôn (thông minh thế, ko thì mất toi 50k tiền gửi xe nhá, hêhhe...), rồi băng qua đường sang bờ hồ ngắm hoa vì đang có festival hoa mới khai trương tối qua mà.
Lễ hội hoa năm nay đẹp, và có vẻ trang trí công phu cầu kỳ hơn năm ngoái. Năm nay cái hơn so với năm ngoái là người ta trang hoàng hoa cỏ, hiện vật ở giữa đường nên 2 bên đường vẫn rộng thênh thang thoải mái chỗ cho mọi người dạo bước ngắm. Cộng thêm năm nay hàng rào chăng bảo vệ khá xa so với hiện vật và số lượng người bảo vệ cũng dày hơn nên mọi người đến ngắm hoa khó mà có cơ hội "phá hoại tàn bạo" như năm ngoái.
2 vc chụp bao nhiêu là ảnh. Chồng bảo nếu mẹ ở đây thì mẹ có thể spend all day chỉ để ngắm hoa thôi. Mình biết là MC mình rất rất yêu hoa lá cỏ thiên nhiên mà...

Ây, dưng mà trước hết post ảnh đi ăn sushi nhìn cho nó nịnh bợ dạ dày tí đã, hehe... Chả là đang ngắm hoa thì chợt nhớ là hỏi xem có em gái nào thảnh thơi tối nay ko để ọp cuối năm luôn 1 thể. Thế là có em Hà là rảnh rỗi vì zai nhà em í vẫn đang busy với công việc. Thế là ngắm hoa xong hẹn hò nhau đi ăn sushi...

..Ho ho.. Ghét thế, bọn nhà hàng này đểu em Hà nhề, suýt nữa thì chúng nó ăn lận của mình những hơn 20 $. May mà chị Thao check bill. Đấy, từ sau ăn gì, ở đâu, hàng quán nào thì cũng cứ phải check lại cái bill nếu có tí nghi ngờ gì đấy nhá... Chả tội gì mà cho chúng nó giầu thêm làm gì... Ghét mặt nhề...

9 month anniversary and xmas in Hanoi

We celebrated our 9 month anniversary, by going out for sushi of course!

On the way we met Santa, who came to bring gifts for all the good boys and girls in our building.

Lots of places in Hanoi are decorated for Christmas, and the kids like to dress up too!

Yes, my hair is getting really long now! I'll have to get it trimmed soon, but it's nice and warm for the winter!

The big church in the center of town on Christmas eve, with lots of people outside taking pictures. Some people wait outside for hours to hear the bells at midnight.

So many people were out on the streets... One foreigner stopped and asked me if people were waiting for something to happen... Nope, they're just hanging out!

Thao was lucky to get this Christmas gift this year! ;)) Both of us were only thinking of everything we need to buy for Katie, I think the shopping is almost done now...

PS from Thao: Yeah, my hubby bought me those gloves, actually he wanted to buy me something bigger and lots of things. But for me that is enough, and i think big gifts do not mean he shows how much he loves me. So i just want a small gift like that to remember this Xmas. For me now I just like to pay money for shopping for Katie, that really makes me happy. But i think shopping for Katie is almost done now, and i hear from friends and people say that the new born baby grows up very fast so should not buy too much new born size. Better save money to buy her diapers and more nice dresses when she grows up later...

I have the best mother in law ever. She sent me and Kyle money for this Xmas season. Kyle says i should buy something for myself. Maybe i should buy a sunglasses later coz i heard that after the baby is born, the mom should wear sunglasses when she goes out under the sun to protect her eyes. So now i just bought those things for Katie and will tell Katie that this is Xmas gift from her from Grandmom from Canada. Thank you very much Linda Grandmom. XOXOXO.

This is the heater. About $15. We wanted to buy something different what can make room warm like the aircon, but our bedroom is too small for it. And i also think that my bedroom is small so it's warmer than big room, wind is not easy to come in. This heater, when we turn it on, the light will turn on and make around hot very fast. It is very good to use for Katie when she is showering, coz when Katie is born in Feb its still cold here.

This is the most Mr handsome in my family now hehe... (He has no one to compare with until next baby is a boy, haha... ).. Humm... I hope he will take care of Katie with me good and not stress if he has to wake up 10 times a night to change diaper for Katie ;))...
Hum.... 9 months anniversary but he writes nothing about it and nothing good of me here :((... Sometime i should call him Mr Boring... Still hard to show emotions or really no feeling, no emotion for the wife? :(((((((((((. Feel so sad :(( huhu...

Oh, we went to BIG C suppermaket yesterday. Kyle wanted to cook westen meal for me for Xmas day, but at the end we canceled. Coz first of all is Chicken there is not good to buy whole one to cook, more is the oven is too small to put whole chicken in it. So we just bought something to make mashed potatoes and cream corn. And from now i promise never to go there anymore. Its a big supermaket so we were walking too much there so i started to get tired and tired and feel like wanna vomit. Katie moved too much inside like baby is coming out.. It was terrible shopping yesterday... Yeah, Katie is almost 8 months already, so i should learn, walking too much and active too much is not good for me and her...

Baby Class

Today we went to a baby class at the Fortuna Hotel. There were soooo many pregnant women there, maybe 500 or more! Most of the girls looked terrible... tired, bad skin, old clothes. But the receptionist said to Thao "Or, you're pregnant but still look good!" :)

The first class we went to was how to give a bath for the baby. It was strange for me, because so many things that they showed seemed to be the opposite of my instincts from Western culture. Like they put the baby in water up to their neck (don't tell Western moms to do that, drowning risk), do a full body massage and stretch the legs and rub the head (easy for new moms to do more harm than good I think), clean ears with a q-tip (easy to damage ears), etc.

Also in Vietnam, there are a lot of customs after the baby is born. For example, the new mother can't touch water for a whole month... no showers, not even wash dishes. And usually the grandmother or someone else in the family comes to stay with the new parents to take care of the baby. What? Somebody else will take care of my kid? I don't think so! :P

Anyways, the next class was how to breathe during labor. I wasn't allowed to go inside, only the girls. Which was bad, because Thao said she already forgets everything! But we are going to another class next week.

Shopping for Katie

Last time when we went back to my hometown we got many clothes from Bong (she is 1 year old now). Here I just show some. All this is new that Bong never used once, just coz her mom bought her too much and she got gifts from people too. Here in vn when someone has a new baby people will bring clothes or money to visit, that's why...

Some of the dresses you see now we gave to Bong when she was newborn, but just because of too much clothes so her mom forgot it at bottom of the dresser so didn't remember this gift is from auntie Thao, SO now it is Katie's turn! :D

Here is some old things that Bong used before. We got about 30 pants and 30 shirts like this. But i don't know if Katie can wear all. Here is Thao washing and hanging out all the clothes to prepare for Katie... Since Kyle came 1 month early, we have to be prepared ;))

Cousin's wedding in hometown - 11/25

We went back to Thao's hometown again, for her cousin's wedding. This time we took the 60km trip by bus. Actually in the beginning Thao didn't want to go back again because she was afraid of the long trip and that is not good for Katie. But I love to see weddings in hometown because it is lots of fun and so many people there, many kinds of food and people always are busy cooking and eating. And the most important is that every time when Thao comes back to her hometown she can eat a lot, not like in Hanoi where she doesn't eat much because as long as she is cooking the smell already makes her full. So this time taking the bus wasn't too bad because it was during the week so not too many people.

When we finally arrived, we both were very hungry and Thao asked me to go to her cousin's house to eat first. But it seems that there was nothing to eat there because it's late now and people are busy cooking for dinner. The wedding is for 2 days, but now it is the first day like engagement day, and already people have been here for a few days to come to help and eat. So we both have to wait for people to cook.

At the back of the house in the garden, people are busy making roasted pork. I tried this before in other cousin's wedding, and it tastes really good when it is still hot. I think I helped more at this wedding than for my own wedding! ;))

It's good to wait near the workers, because you can grab the meat as soon as its ready! Good that the hungry pregnant girl also remembers to feed her husband...

Yummy... tastes really good. And I love to see Thao eat alottttttttt.... I know she loves this kind of cooking very much...

The old women are making their chewing tobacco leaves... In the wedding the old men and women like to eat this. Also in engagement day the groom's family has to bring those to the bride's house. It is a symbol of happiness.

We stayed a few more days and when we went to Hanoi we took soooooo many different kinds of food that Thao's mom prepared for us. Chicken, beef, vegetable, fruit...
This time we got a really slooooow bus on the way back, and very full. One girl was vomiting the whole way ughhh! But we had a very nice time visiting hometown and going to the wedding, so it was worth it.

And there are still 2 more weddings coming up in the next two months! But we don't know if we will come back or not. I like to go back there of course, but it depends on how Thao and Katie are feeling...

French Hospital

Today we went to the French hospital in Hanoi. It was a very nice hospital, very clean and everything in Vietnamese, English, French. Of course Thao was very worried about taking blood, and poor her, she could not eat anything for breakfast. What is funny about that hospital is that they make you run around a lot. We had to wait for the doctor checkup, then Thao had to pee in a cup, then pay for checkup. The doctor said he had to do two blood tests, one to check blood type and anything wrong, and another to check the sugar levels in Thao's blood after drinking some sugar water and waiting for 1 hour, to see if there was any problem with the baby growing too fast. So we went downstairs for first blood test. See, nothing to worry about Thao! Then go to pharmacy to pick up a vaccine. No wait, have to go to the cashier to pay first. Okay, back to the pharmacy to pick up the vaccine. Yes, you actually have to hold your own glass vial of vaccine. It was for Tetanus. Then walk to the other end of the hospital to get someone to give you the vaccine. Then wait about 45 minutes. Then walk to pharmacy again to pick up Calcium tablets. Oh wait, pay first. Okay, back to pharmacy. Then back to other testing room to take blood one more time. Thao said the first blood test was much easier because the French nurse was nice, but the second time the Vietnamese nurse did not know what she was doing and it hurt a lot. So now it was almost 1pm, and poor Thao couldn't eat anything yet but still had to give blood two times and take the vaccine needle.

One thing I have gotten used to in Vietnam is the difference prices for locals and foreigners. The contract for delivery is $770 USD in Vietnamese, while the English version quotes $1200 for the same thing! Next time I will have to check the French version, maybe it is cheaper! :)

Thao was scared to get that Tetanus vaccine because she heard from a lot of people that it can hurt sooo much and the baby seems tired too and doesn't move for many days. And the doctor even said that sometimes the arm can get swollen so big like a tennis ball or she can get high fever and have to come back to the hospital. But it seems she is fine, after eating lunch we went home and had a nice afternoon nap for a few hours. And now actually the bloodtest arm is hurting more than the vaccine arm! But she still has to go again for another dose of the same vaccine in 1 month...

P.S. Thao was wrong, she only weighs 59kg, not 61kg. And maybe now she was wearing heavy clothes for winter....

And we spoke too soon, last night was terrible for her. Her arm from the bloodtest was blue and hurt, from the French girl it seems, maybe the vnese girl was better after all. And her vaccine arm started to hurt sooo much and hard for her to breathe all night. Katie seemed tired too, not moving much. So everyone on the internet complaining about that vaccine is right!!

28 week ultrasound

It seems like it has been awhile since the last ultrasound... but actually it's only been 1 month.

This time we went again to the 2nd doctor, the one where I couldn't go inside, but not the grumpy mean doctor. When Thao booked the appointment a week in advance, we were given spot #13 on that day. We were told to be there at 9:30am, but since last time we had to wait a long time, we came at 10am instead. But still we waited sooooo long. When we came there, there were a lot of pregnant woman waiting there already, and at the waiting room outside there were a lot of husbands waiting. And finally after waiting so long, they were only at #9... But one doctor that came from outside asks the girls "Who has the young handsome foreigner husband waiting outside?" So Thao said "yes it's me, he is 2 years younger :(" So the ultrasound doctor said "oh, it must be terrible for him to live in VN, and waiting so long outside... And also to have an old ugly wife! Ok, come here quick!" heheheh but at least she did not have to wait more!

Mommy's weight: 59kg (+4 kg)

Katie is growing up fast! And Thao is gaining weight now, but just in her belly. Some people are surprised that her hands and feet aren't swollen up like other pregnant women. She has a good appetite and always wants to eat something like fruit or sugar cane. The doctor did say that she should walk more every day so that the baby can turn head down, but from what I read that usually doesn't happen until 32 weeks or even 35 weeks so it isn't anything to worry about. But it's still good to walk a lot for exercise!

How terrible it is ? what I have to do now ? I am always painful by the cramp at night at my calf of legs .It is very hurt. It makes me lose sleep until morrning and after getting up I walk lame. They said i have a serious lack of calcium. Why? I took vitamin pills everyday.:((
